Have you ever had the desire to be in control; on the top of the heap so to speak? And have you found out that it is not as great as you thought it would be? There are all those decisions plus the things you can no longer do or enjoy.
In the Old Testament Balaam was a prophet hired by the king of Moab to curse Israel as they moved across the plains of Moab because he feared their taking over the land. But God said to Balaam, “You shall not go with them; you shall not curse the people, for they are blessed.” (Numbers 22:12). When Balaam was offered more money he asked for patience to hear more because he wanted the silver and gold that was promised. So once again God came to Balaam at night and said to him, “If the men come to call you, rise and go with them; but only the word which I speak to you – that shall you do.” (22:20).
As we move to the New Testament we find that things have not changed even with the appearance of our Lord upon the earth. The issue of control is still being questioned. In the book of Matthew we read – And when He had come into the house, the blind men came to Him. And Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They said to Him, “Yes, Lord.” Then He touched their eyes, saying, “According to your faith let it be to you.” And their eyes were opened (9:28). When Jesus was warning His disciples regarding their witness in the world He said – But when they deliver you up, do not worry about how or what you should speak. For it will be given to you in that hour what you should speak; for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you (10:19-20).
If you are anything like me I am sure you have experienced times when you seriously would like someone else to make a decision for you. It may be because you lack information and simply don’t want to spend the time researching the issue or it may be because you are sitting on the fence and want to be sure you fall off in the right direction. Lets face it, there are some times in this life when we feel that we need to be assured of the result before we put our hand to the plow. So just who are you going to allow to take the place you are hoping to abdicate, if only this one time? I have a good solution!
God has not changed since time began. He hears our prayers and knows that often we are looking for just a little crack in which to put a foot. We know what we want to do and God often will permit us to do just that even to our detriment. You would think by now that we would have the sense to quit testing the issue of control. Actually there are times, at least in my opinion, that I would be more comfortable having someone else make the decision. I seem to remember hearing that you can’t have your cake and eat it too as we often wish were the case.
Actually the picture is quite clear even if we don’t wear glasses. The Father who created us didn’t just make a bunch of people and then begin to move them around a big chess board; He actually made each and every one of us for a particular purpose. How do we discover that purpose and know that we are reading the text correctly? We ASK. You have to be kidding! You mean that Almighty God will actually condescend to speak to us often pathetic earthlings. Yes, I mean exactly that. It may take time and effort mixed with sincerity and lots of prayer, but God will always respond to those who come to Him with humility and an open mind and heart. His word tells us truthfully – Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and My burden is light (Matthew 11: 28-30).
