Able To See?

In today’s world, most of us take being able to see for granted even though we know that the physically blind are among us.  It is true that you will occasionally find a blind man who can see better than those of us with sight.  How can that be?  Maybe it is because the most important things in life to see are spiritual things that require more time and thought to properly understand.  The dictionary backs this up with its first definition being to perceive with the eyes and the second to perceive with the mind, both of which are important in order to be the whole man that God created us to be.  I have the feeling though that most of us place more importance on the former while God places more value on the latter.  He plainly says – You cannot see My face, for no man shall see Me, and live (Exodus 33:20).  The Psalmist follows this up with Come and see the works of God; He is awesome in His doing (66:5).

Hopefully many of us have found out in life the difference.  When we were younger we looked for beauty in the physical; it was always the better looking that got the dates and were the cheer-leaders; while those with the Spirit got the grades and were best prepared for the future that God intended.  As we have attained age and hopefully wisdom we have come to realize that the packaging is often faulty and the winner is usually the one who sought the better part.  Jesus tried many years ago to help us understand the difference when He said – the hearts of this people have grown dull…their eyes they have closed, lest they should see…lest they should understand with their hearts and turn, so that I should heal them (Matthew 13:15).  It’s a shame that so many years have had to pass before we could see that we have often taken the wrong path.

It is true that no matter our age, most of us have very little understanding of what the future will actually hold for us; it is a mystery which we read about, discuss and fail to comprehend because it is not given us to know.  God has always known the difficulties this world would possess even as we have grown in knowledge over the years.  Due to the ever-increasing evil Satan has attempted to use, to cover up the purpose of God’s creation of love, our clear waters have become cloudy and the church of today’s world cannot change the texture of a man’s soul, only God can do that.  Our only realistic hope is found in the words of John as he wrote - A little while longer and the world will see Me no more, but you will see Me.  Because I live, you will live also (14:19).  John, more than any other disciple of our Lord, suffered for his beliefs in ways it is inconceivable for us today to comprehend.  Yet, this earthly man, who went through unbelievable torture was led to tell others - Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is (1st John 3:2).

I know you will agree with me when I say that today’s world has become so busy that we rarely find the time to read anything and often we are simply too exhausted to pull a book off the shelf and try to focus on what the little print is saying.  There is always tomorrow, right now we simply need to relax and try to focus on a little light humor, at least something we don’t have to stress about.  Our minds are tired as well as our bodies and we know tomorrow will be coming sooner than we like.  Maybe we can squeeze in more time then, if we really try.

I could ask you why you have insurance; we all have it for protection.  It’s practical!  Of course it is, for our physical bodies, but what about our souls?

Open my eyes that I may see
Glimpses of truth Thou hast for me;
Place in my hands the wonderful key
That shall unclasp and set me free.
