I will lift up my eyes to the hills – from whence comes my help? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, He who keeps Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep (Psalm 121).
How many times in this life do we feel like we need help? We all have had those times when we simply feel like we just cannot – whatever the situation. If you are one of the fortunate who were taught early in life by your parents that there is an answer, hopefully you still trust in that. If not I sincerely hope you will know just where to turn. You are probably saying to yourself at this point that you are not Israel, but if you check the commentaries written for our understanding you will read for yourself – the new community in Christ is a spiritual Israel. Thus, in a sense, the history of Israel can never really end; it can only be brought to fulfillment (Layman’s Bible Encyclopedia).
Hmm! that does put a new twist on things, doesn’t it? It is a guarantee that nothing else can possible give us. However, it does have one requirement – you must believe in the One who created you and the Word He gave for the fulfillment of your life which you will hopefully accomplish with His help. We have been so very blessed, but the price is still beyond the reality of understanding. It is doubtful you ever will comprehend your value or the love you have been given.
Moses did his best to teach the people of his day as the Lord imparted to him. The words he spoke have been recorded for us in the 5th and 6th chapters of the book of Deuteronomy. You might want to read them again to refresh your understanding and possibly change the way you think about your day to day lives.
Over the years many books have been written and many wise words spoken to show the changing generations in their language what is right and what is wrong. The problem is that we have incorporated so many changes as our world has changed that the truth has often been diminished with the excuses of supposed learning. The truth is that with the many changes we currently see we have lost the truth of what God has always seen. He still loves His creation as when it was first formed, but we have misplaced the original truth as we have chosen to make things easier by watering down the old regulations and replacing them with what seems easier and more timely for our day.
Is it possible that we have simply forgotten or is it that we no longer see the need as we have supposedly increased in wisdom as well as common sense? Our Father gave us His Son because He knew we would need not only His words, but also His example. Many of us have had times of shedding tears when we realize the cost of our lives, but then they become so easy to put back on the shelf as we are faced with what we consider must be done right now. We will return to the story when we have time. We have so easily managed to rewrite the book of life according to what our individual plans and problems are. Also it is easy enough to put off until tomorrow even things we consider important. We still have time. Do we?
In today’s world individual preferences and responsibilities seem to have overcome those of God’s place in the substructure of the world’s population. Does it really matter?
Take my life and let it be consecrated, Lord, to Thee.
Take my moments and my days; let them flow in ceaseless praise.
Take my love, my Lord, I pour at Thy feet its treasure store,
Take myself and I will be ever only all for Thee.
